2017 Designer House Doylestown Pa

The New Chat Room

Each year, we are so honored to take part in the Bucks County Designer House & Gardens. For more than 40 years, the Buck County Designer House & Gardens has been the largest fundraiser operated by the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown. The organization finds a home in the area to completely revamp and open for house tours. This annual event now attracts more than 8,000 visitors each year. Proceeds from the event support Doylestown Hospital and the mission of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown.

This years home, Hill Crest Manor, a Victorian farmhouse, was built in 1808 on 5.5 acres of land in Doylestown, PA. The house has since had two additions built, but the original charm remains; a cash drawer built into the windows, where field hands could receive their pay, a hand pulled door bell sits in the heart of the home, the large dining room and designated 'boot warmers' were built in. At three stories tall, the house is full of rustic charm and large floorboards.

We had the opportunity to design one of the main living room areas and entitled it 'The New Chat Room' - a modern sitting room perfect for entertaining guests. This room was part of the second addition to the house, done in the late 1800s and includes a fireplace with Mercer tile featuring stunning original trim around the ceiling. The only adjustment we made was painting the entire room in Benjamin Moore's Stonington Gray, a soft gray from their Historic Color Collection. We wanted to choose a color to pay homage to the historical aspects of this stately home.

It all started with the rug...and then everything was designed around that focal point. Our design team had initially planned to do a room that was strictly traditional, but instead opted for a traditional room with a modern take.

From here, the pieces came together quickly. The blue velvet sofa was perfect with the neutral gray flared side chairs. the Fuschia pillows added punch while the yellow arm chair and fiddle leaf fig tree paired exquisitely. Accent colors were pulled from the large abstract art between the bookshelves and the rug.

The designers wanted this space to feel like it was collected and pulled together over time; not just picked out at once and overwhelmingly matchy. It has a funky bohemian vintage vibe, and the bright colors bring the room into modern times.

Vintage prints of both Stevie Nicks and the Beatles adorn the walls and play off the record album print. The large abstract statement art and amber, blue and green accessories tie the space together beautifully. Fluffy pull up stools placed in the front of the fireplace provide additional casual seating. Geometric accents referenced in the cocktail, side tables and the fireplace screen give a nod to an earlier decade.

Our design team had a blast with this project and cannot wait for next year's Design House!
